Helmut Striffler: Church of Reconciliation (Versöhnungskirche), 1963C–1965

  • Mannheim-Rheinau, Germany, Show on map
  • #REL #Western Europe
  • The craggy, raw exposed concrete exterior is reminiscent of rock structures. The church can house up to 400 people and is complemented by secondary buildings for a parish hall and rectory. The irregular trapezoid floor plan and the diagonal positioning of the benches lead towards the altar. (Special thanks to Eva Seemann)

  • Originally exposed concrete on the exterior painted in the 1980s. Heritage listed since 2008.

This building was included in the red list, published in our exhibition catalog SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey (September 2017). After a status review on December 10, 2024, it was reclassified in the online database from red (endangered) to blue (saved).
