Peter Biedermann / Werner Böninger: Town Hall, 1966C–1967

  • Gräfelfing, Germany, Show on map
  • #GOV #CastInPlaceConcrete #Western Europe
  • A composition of exposed concrete squares and windows hidden behind concrete slats distinguish the building and are very characteristic of the time. Peter Biedermann and Werner Böninger competed against 72 architectural firms and finally won the competition with their idea for a town hall cast entirely in concrete.  Not all citizens liked the monstrous concrete building, but it proved itself and the architects were awarded the Architecture Prize of the Association of German Architects (BDA) in 1969. The massive entrance portals, the window frames and even the original chairs in the conference hall still exist today!

  • Heritage protected since 2020. By the Bayerisches Landesamt für Denkmalpflege, the Gräfelfing City Hall has been listed as historical monument. Still, compromises must be made, for example, due to the lack of accessibility, an elevator is being planned.
