The holiday village of Fiesch was initiated to develop the touristic region in times of post-war decline. The cooperative “Feriendorf Fiesch” anticipated the potential of grouping two needs which could easily be combined in times of peace: a military hospital for the swiss army (ca. 500 beds) and an accommodation for international youth groups (ca. 1’000 beds). The site is located on an inclined glade—apart from the village of Fiesch. The winning project of the architects Paul Morisod, Jean Kyburz, and Edouard Furrer from Sion groups the functions in pavilion-like buildings which respond to the topography and allow various paths, steps and squares in between. The articulated fair-faced concrete volumes with wooden window frames correspond to the environment of woods and rocks. Written by Mira Heiser

Between 1986-2011 some buildings were adapted to new demands and to the needs of more individual guests. The military hospital for instance was converted into a youth hostel (2011).
