  • Boston, Massachusetts, USA, Show on map

  • The complex is home to a labor office, municipal administration offices and a psychiatric clinic including a chapel. Another wing, as well as a high-rise were never realized. Rudolph references the façade structure of the neighboring Boston City Hall, which was being built at that time. However, the Government Center with its internal nooks qua plazas responds to the criticism that the square outside Boston City Hall was too large and poorly structured.

  • Poorly maintained and threatened by renovation. Also, the historic mural by Constantino Nivola is in danger.
The State of Massachusetts was planning to demolish parts of the building first (Hurley Building), but then decided as outcome of an architectural competition in 2021/2022 to renovate it. Leggat McCall Properties were selected. They plan an extensive renovations to the building, including integrating two towers into and above the building, with a total cost above $1 billion (last updated on February 2, 2025).
