Kivett & Myers Architects: Kansas City International Airport, ?–1972

  • Kansas City , Missouri, USA, Show on map
  • #TRA #North America
  • Brutalist airport complex in exposed concrete with round terminals. The efficient “drive-to-your-gate” concept, which minimizes the distance between the curb where passengers are dropped off and the gate where they board the aircraft, was implemented here for the first time.

  • The building is currently undergoing fundamental changes. Its unique “drive-to-your-gate” concept with the three circular terminals was innovative in its day, but is in the process of demolition. As part of a wider redevelopment project, the old Terminals A, B and C were replaced with a new, single terminal (opened in February 28, 2023). Terminal A was already demolished in March 2019. The demolition of Terminals B and C began in July 2024 and is expected to take 10 months. While the original construction of the airport was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, the redevelopment was deemed to have a detrimental impact on the historic value of the whole airport site, ultimately disqualifying it from official landmark protection.

This building was included in the red list, published in our exhibition catalog SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey (September 2017). After a status review on February 4, 2025, it is still classified as red (endangered) in the online database.
