Gerhard Weber / Georg Küttinger: Central Post Administration Building Post-Pyramide, 1969D–1977

  • Hamburg, Germany, Show on map
  • #PUB #Megastructure #RescueCampaign #Western Europe
  • In the 1970’s, the building, known as "Post-Pyramid" in the vernacular, was built in the "City Nord". The design of the new office district, located between the airport and the city centre in the north of Hamburg, was based on the model of the "Athens Charter". For every new building, an architectural competition was obligatory. Because of its size and its form, the "Oberpostdirektion" was without a doubt the most striking building of the "City Nord". (Special thanks to Marco Alexander Hosemann)

  • Since the sale by the Deutsche Post AG in 2006, the building has changed hands several times. Despite the building was in a generally good condition and furthermore was listed as part of the monument ensemble "City Nord", it was demolished in 2018.

This building was included in the red list, published in our exhibition catalog SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey (September 2017). After a status review on November 22, 2024, it was reclassified in the online database from red (endangered) to black (demolished).
