Nicola Nicolov: Restaurant Magura, Bar Orient, Hotel Kontinental, 1965D–1968

  • Slanchev Bryag Resort (near Nessebar), Bulgaria, Show on map

  • In between the elongated wings of the Kontinental runs an internal street which draws the viewer’s attention to the sculpture-like buildings of the Restaurant Magura and Bar Orient. The Bar Orient consists of two structures which take up oriental motifs in raw concrete. The Restaurant Magura is a concrete construction archaic in appearance, with large open terraces under a massively protruding roof made of flat and beam-shaped concrete elements that have been expressively tiered. In the restaurant’s interior space, the raw concrete beams are also visible, daringly combined with ceiling elements that hang down sharply. Excerpt from Elke Beyer and Anke Hagemann’s article in: SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey. Catalog DAM + Wüstenrot Foundation, Zurich (Park Books) 2017

  • Today the Hotel Kontinental’s exterior has been preserved almost in its original form and is in relatively good condition. The Bar Orient and Restaurant Magura, by contrast, have been adapted for new uses.
