Kenzo Tange: Kuwait Embassy, 1966D–1970

  • Tokyo, Japan, Show on map
  • #GOV #East Asia
  • The building is made up of sharp-edged, block-like volumes that are grouped asymmetrically around an elevated inner courtyard. Exposed concrete, deeply cut openings and the tectonically layered façade design lend the ensemble a powerful monumentality, interspersed with subtle traditional echoes.

  • In 2017, there were plans to demolish the building and replace it with a new one, with demolition scheduled for 2018 and completion of the new building for 2020. However, these plans appear to have been scrapped later. Kenzo Tange's building is still standing today and continues to operate as an embassy for Kuwait. However, the façade is showing signs of weathering and would benefit from renovation (last updated on February 21, 2025).
