As part of a large scale redevelopment program the library was Europe's largest non-national municipal library. For political and financial reasons most of the planned buildings were never realized. Prince Charles stated the building looked like "a place where books are incinerated, not kept".

Closed in 2013, demolished 2015–2016. The Save the Birmingham Library campaign unfortunately was unsuccessful.
