Kenzo Tange: City Hall (today: Kurashiki Museum of Art), 1958D–1960

  • Kurashiki, Japan, Show on map
  • #GOV #Precast #East Asia
  • Kenzo Tange's town hall building in Kurashiki stands on a massive concrete base and rests on massive columns that taper towards the top. From here, an architecture of enormous mass and fortress-like solidity emerges. Angular and rounded elements are outlined by the wooden board pattern of the formwork, which further emphasizes the three-dimensional plasticity.

  • Heritage protected and in use. The originally untreated concrete building was later given a gray coat of paint.

In 1980, Kurashiki City Hall moved to a new location and plans were made to convert the building into a museum. The conversion began 1982 and was carried out according to the plans of architect Shizutaro Urabe (last updated on July 4, 2024).
