Heinz Buchmann / Josef Rikus: Johannes XXIII, 1964D–1969

Designed by sculptor Josef Rikus, who says he heavily relied on architect Heinz Buchmann for the technical realization. On the interior, the spatial/conceptual idea of having the services held under a large concrete tree soon becomes apparent. The exterior is less figurative. There, the load-bearing panels required seem to have been slotted together as if in an interlocking card game.

Heritage protected since 2016. In the same year, the Cologne-based architecture firm 3pass carried out a renovation of the church building, which primarily involved restoring the concrete façade (last updated on September 26, 2024).
