  • Rice University’s only Brutalist-style building, Lovett College opened as a new all-male residential hall in 1968. It was built with distinctive concrete grating on three of the upper floors to prevent student riots, as was common in the late 1960s. Today the residential college is co-ed and the grating’s main practical purpose is to help keep the building hurricane-proof. Because of its rigid rectangular shape, students lovingly nickname the building “the toaster.” Written by Kayla Opall, Rice University '14

  • Still actively in use as a residential college.
