The brutalist area of the university, which among other things is also the first university to be placed under monumental protection and was also one of the buildings honoured as "Big Beautiful Buildings" in 2018, extends far and wide. In the middle of it rises the library building. It is a skeleton building which, due to the ground floor being moved to the back, looks as if one third of it is standing on pillars. Wide and narrow strips of exposed concrete extend horizontally over the façade, in between the red steel forms a fine pattern which is broken up by irregular concrete slabs. The 2nd floor is also set back and is thus hidden by the volume of the building.
Fun fact: The picture seems to be mirrored, but the lettering is really upside down. A work of art by the German artist Mischa Kuball. The building was actually designed so that the entrance is opposite the Audimax. Now, however, the entrance is at the back and entrance doors were added later. According to this, today's entrance is reversed. The artist's idea: to give the building a new twist. -
Since 2015 the university complex is heritage listed (last updated on July 30, 2020).
