Edvard Ravnikar: Creina Hotel, 1968?–1970

  • Kranj, Slovenia, Show on map
  • #TOU #Eastern Europe
  • For this hotel, Ravnikar plays with sculptural contrasts. The massive cantilevered structural elements rendered in exposed concrete are evocative of the machine aesthetics of Brutalist megastructures. On the other hand the detailed decorative treatment of brick infills speaks of artisanal architectural traditions.

  • Hotel Creina is listed in the Slovene Cultural Heritage Register, however, before it was protected, two inappropriate extensions were added that mar its original image. During the renovation, the hotel’s interior was destroyed as well, and the restaurant was moved to the ground level. The furniture, along with all wall and ceiling claddings, was removed and the exposed concrete painted. The office of the Institute for Protection of Cultural Heritage conditions any further intervention upon the reestablishment of the building’s original state. Excerpt from Aleš Vodopivec’s article in: SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey. Catalog DAM + Wüstenrot Foundation, Zurich (Park Books) 2017
