A whole settlement with lush greenery, pedestrian walkways floating between trees, squares in front of the front doors to meet and linger: The Quartiere “Matteotti” was planned and (only partially) built between 1969 and 1975 for the workers of the nearby steelworks. It is the result of a participatory development process: future residents and users were invited to talk not only about details of the housing design, but also about how they would like to live and spend their freetime outside the factory. Giancarlo de Carlo's design placed the focus on the generosity of the communal spaces as part of an urban vision. The housing complex is considered a major work of the architect.
