[Jooste] studied at the University of Pretoria’s Depart- ment of Architecture from 1944 to 1947 … Here, lecturers such as Norman Eaton and Hellmut Stauch inspired students to appreciate the efficiencies, constructional rationality and spatial layout of Modernist architecture and to hybridize those approaches with the use of local materials and the influences of the hot wet summers and cold dry winters of the Pretoria region. This approach has been referred to by a number of authors as a Contemporary Vernacular of the Transvaal. Excerpt from Arthur Barker’s article in: SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey.
