The Maison Rouge, situated at the centrally located Place Kléber, forges a link between medieval architecture, which strongly dominates the historical centre of Strasbourg, and Brutalism. You will also find influences of New Regionalism when looking at the staggered, slate roof, which is designed like a sloped tetrahedron. A glass pyramid roof, invisible from the front of the Maison Rouge, sits on top of the courtyard with its escalators and galleries. Herrenschmidt composed the façade of distinctly framed, differently sized cubes. The window panes are made of smoked glass and subtly reflect the adjacent sights. They also offer a modern interpretation of the regionally typical dormers. The ground floor with its black columns harbours among others the FNAC department store, which takes up a large part of the building. Written by Valentin J. Hemberger
