Werkgruppe 7 / Bauturm: Staatliche Hochschule für Musik (today: Hochschule für Musik und Tanz), 1973C–1977

  • Cologne, Germany, Show on map
  • #EDU #Western Europe
  • Red outside, green and yellow inside. Aluminium cladding adorns the concrete building on the outside and inside. The diagonally staggered façade characterizes the building. The protruding spikes appear almost dangerous. Expressively, some floors protrude and are stabilized by concrete columns, others are set back. In the interior, the individual floors are staggered one above the other, creating high and low ceilings supported by massive concrete columns.

The building, constructed between 1973 and 1977, was designed by the then young Cologne architectural collective “Bauturm. They took part in the architectural competition organized by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Cologne in 1969 surprisingly won first place. In 1975, the collective—from then on an association of seven architects named “Werkgruppe 7 und Bauturm—won the Cologne Architecture Prize for their project even before its final completion.

  • In use. Heritage protected since 2011 (last updated on June 20, 2024).
