On the western shore of the Seychelles main island Mahé stands the giant complex of the former Mahé Beach Hotel, once the model hotel of the socialist country. On the Seychelles, multi-storey hotel buildings are normally not permitted. The complex is a structural exception.

The first major capitalist events (such as Miss elections) were held here in the 1990s. A few years ago, the ageing complex was closed. On hotel rating portals there are still entries of disappointed holidaymakers about the terrible structural condition.
