David Finci: Hotel Pelegrin, 1963

  • Kupari, Croatia, Show on map
  • #TOU #Eastern Europe
  • The bay of Kupari was once an exclusive seaside resort with the old Grand Hotel. From 1960 the bay was systematically developed into a tourist hotspot. "Hotel Pelegrin" and "Hotel Goricina" were built. “Hotel Goricina” was extended in 1978 by “Hotel Goricina II”, in the same year “Hotel Kupari” was built. The clientele was mostly the military plus relatives. Around 1980 the hotel complexes could accommodate about 2000 guests and the surrounding campsites another 4000 guests. “Hotel Pelegrin” alone had room for 419 guests.

  • The "Hotel Pelegrin" and the surrounding hotels became the target of an attack during the Yugoslav war in 1991. It was bombed, looted and set on fire. After the war the whole bay was not rebuilt. Beside the Hotel Pelegrin, the Grand Hotel, the "Hotel Kupari" and the "Hotel Goricina" are empty (last updated on February 2, 2025).
