  • Due to the rapidly growing parish, the old St. Mary's Church became already too small ten years after its construction. So, the architect Hans Werner Merkle was assigned to build a new, larger church. For him, two aspects were groundbreaking for the design: on the one hand, the inspiration by Le Corbusier's modern concrete construction method, in the way it was used for Notre Dame du Haut in Ronchamp, and on the other hand, the liturgical reform of the 2nd Vatican Council. The result was an expressive church building that looks like a tent. On mighty exposed concrete walls rests a dynamic, deep down reeching roof covered with slate. From the inside, the ceiling is cladded with warm wood. In combination with the skylights, it looks like a firmament. When one enters the worship space from the vestibule, a vastness opens up and one's gaze falls on the chancel, which is thus indirectly illuminated.

  • In 2015, the state of Baden-Württemberg selected St. Mary's Church among 400 buildings from the 1960s and 1970s, along with nine others, and listed it as historical monument (last updated on May 24, 2024).
