Szeto Wai: Wu Chung Library, 1972

  • Hong Kong, China, Show on map
  • #CUL #East Asia
  • The 3-storey Library with an emphasis on horizontality, is contrasted with the axe-shaped “Lady Tower” with a strong vertical presence in the back, creating a visual harmony. The portico of the library is elevated on the podium, creating a visual focal point for the whole building. In terms of structural expression, the library does not have exposed load-bearing beams or columns, instead, exposed the circulation and service core which are usually placed internally, can be viewed as an atypical brutalist expression. In terms of building materials, Szeto has utilized a palette of them for variations. Fairfaced concrete with board pattern and external plaster are two typical elements that can also be found in the overall United College palette, the former at slabs and the latter as facade finishes under windows. Random pattern rubble pitching can be found at the foundation. The circular and expressive circulation core is underscored by ribbed and hammered concrete.

  • In use. Façade repainted in white colour and interior renovation was found.
