The fire station “Feuerwache 4” is a six-story high building with an exposed concrete façade located in the perimeter block in the northern part of Maxvorstadt. A vehicle hall was located on the ground floor above an underground car park. Above that, two floors accommodated the administration of the fire station. The upper three floors contain apartments for the employees of the Munich fire department. In order to organize these different functions, Kurt Ackermann chose a reinforced concrete skeleton construction. The external columns step upwards and strongly characterize the rational concrete façade.
Based on Le Corbusier’s Unite d’Habitation, Ackermann created a children’s playground on the roof of the building. The Munich student group EPEM was commissioned by Ackermann to design it. Two group members, the journalist Peter Bode and the architect Adrian Neven Du Mont, created a colorful concrete layout with various play equipment.

In use. Due to a general restructuring of the fire department of Munich the building is no longer used as a fire station. Since 2016, a new fire station has replaced the old one. Today, the Munich fire department uses the building temporarily as offices. The children’s playground got demolished in 1981.
