London County Council Architects / Norman Engleback / John Attenborough / Warren Chalk / Ron Herron / John Roberts / WJ Sutherland: Queen Elizabeth Hall & Purcell Room, 1967

  • London, Great Britain, Show on map
  • #CUL #Western Europe
  • Music venue on Southbank Centre in brutalist style. The Queen Elisabeth Hall has over 900 seats and the Purcell Room in the same building has 360 seats.

  • In use.

The venue was closed during renovation works by the architecture practice Feilden Clegg Bradley from September 2015 until April 2018.

In February 2020, the Minister for Culture, Baroness Morgan of Cotes, granted a Certificate of Immunity from Listing for the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Purcell Room and the Hayward Gallery. This certificate prevented these buildings from being listed for a period of five years.

In February 2026, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Purcell Room, together with the Hayward Gallery and the the skatepark under-croft, were finally granted Grade II listed status as part of the Southbank Centre by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. This ended a 35-year campaign by the Twentieth Century Society and Historic England, whose recommendations for listing had been rejected on six occasions since 1991.

The new designation provides legal protection for the buildings’ layout, interiors and characteristic concrete forms and places future alterations under strict heritage oversight (last updated on February 13, 2026).
