  • Opened in 1972 in the green belt of Szombathely, Hotel Claudius was considered one of the most modern and comfortable hotels in the Hungarian countryside. Named after the Roman emperor Claudius, founder of the ancient city of Savaria, the hotel was designed by architect Péter Fazakas together with interior designer Gábor Sellyei. Located along Bartók Béla Boulevard near the city’s boating lake and sports facilities, the hotel was conceived as a landscape-oriented leisure complex. Its east–west oriented slab-like volume is organised around a central corridor system, allowing views both towards the lake and the surrounding greenery. The building rests partly on pile foundations and a monolithic reinforced concrete frame. Its façade is characterised by sculpturally shaped precast concrete elements with glass inserts and a textured coating. The repetitive framing of the loggias gives the elevations a strongly articulated appearance, while the roofline is crowned by a ribbed exposed concrete structure reminiscent of a half-pipe. The ground floor containes communal and service areas, including the lobby, reception, restaurant and technical rooms, while an additional gallery level houses a bar, offices and staff facilities. Above are four identical residential floors with 28 double rooms each. In contrast to the muted colours of the exterior, the interiors were designed in a colourful manner. A 16-square-metre mural by painter ErnÅ‘ Fóth decorated the entrance hall, although its current whereabouts are unknown.

  • Closed since around 2020. Apparently vacant and with an uncertain future (last updated on May 18, 2026).
