With its basic polygonal structure the theater was often mentioned in contemporary literature as an example of how architecture can blend with its surroundings, unlike the International Style buildings, that many perceived as decontextualized structures. Auditorium and foyer are largely preserved in their original guise.Â

Sheet metal cladding for the exposed concrete shell of the stage section since the 1980s (supervised by Hämer), heritage listed since 2002, minor renovation in 2002–2005. Since 2001 controversial discussions about future renovations. The condition of the building is dilapidated: chipped concrete, worn interior, outdated building technology. A comprehensive general refurbishment of the theater is currently planned. The planning contracts for architects, structural engineers, electrical and building services and stage technology were awarded in 2023. The renovation work is scheduled to begin in 2027. The brutalist style is to be preserved in accordance with the monument regulations. In the meantime, a wooden theater already used as an interim venue during the renovation of the theater in St. Gallen is to be set up as an alternative venue on Jahnstraße. However, how the refurbishment will continue in January 2025 seems to be up in the air: Due to the tight budget situation, some city councillors are apparently considering postponing the renovation of the municipal theater in Ingolstadt (last updated on February 7, 2025).
